Congrats on the new modules Cab. Quite an endeavor. Your models deserve a nice layout. So how are the other guys' from the Heavy Electric group doing on theirs? Am i correct in recalling that you also belong to a club with catenary trackage?
Some of my earliest memories of trains, and riding the Reading, are exactly what you are modeling.

The catenary definitely has that "Reading" look. Don't forget to visit the "Modeling Goodies" section of the site to download the "High Voltage" signs to affix to the uprights...

Hey, thats pretty convenient! I'll have to start printing them out right away!

I wish i did have the space for a nicer layout, my 4X8 i started out with was long ago to small for what I would like to do.

You are correct, though so far everyone is modeling somewhere on the NEC ( Mostly the Philly area, though my NEC modules are of North Elizabeth, NJ). I still need to get some track and scenery stuff together before I start on the catenary for my NEC modules.

I am glad that I am capturing your memmories. This is one of the main reasons I like modeling "the most traveled trains". Though freight trains tend to get more attention, for many of us near big cities, its these commuter trains that we get exposed to all the time, and its a strong possibility that our earliest exposure to trains are these commuter trains, especially in the territory occupied by the Reading Company

In RDG Company General Instructions in the Employee TT, there is a nice diagram showing all the components by name. There are no dimensions but it shows a two track setup. I can make a PDF of the pages if it helps.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I recall that the pantographs were balanced for catenary wire at 22 feet but I can't find any documentation to support that. The pantograph in locked down position was 15'-6" above the rail so another 6'-6" to the wire seems about right.

The biggest difference between Reading and Pennsy catenary was that Reading did not have "Steady Spans" and "Steady Rods" at every column. This could allow the wire to move laterally as a pantograph excerted pressure upwards as it passed. This is why all of the Reading cars were turned so that the pantograph end was towards Reading Teminal.

It could be neat to see, and i bet they would make a good addition to this website. I suspect this may be the same picture in the book "Electric Trains to Reading Terminal", but we'll have to see.
