That's a major bummer about Weaver! First Champion Decals, then Floquil, and now Scale Coat. It's a ready to run world!

Your absolutely correct with that statement Robin.I know everyone has different talents when it comes to modeling, but its the effort and sense of accomplishment when a project is completed that counts. The more you practice the better you get with different aspects of the hobby. Now a days ,IMHO,if you could open a RTR model and place it on the track you become an official model railroader. :woohoo:

Somewhere I read we've become a generation of "model buyers" rather than "model builders." While it's sad to see some of our favorite paint brands, decals, detail parts, etc. being discontinued, it does seem that there are some other smaller "niche" manufacturers stepping in with replacement products. They may not be as readily available on our hobby shop (also disappearing) shelves, but they are out there, eg., the Reading Modeler for decals. I agree with Chris--there's a great sense of satisfaction when a model building project is finished.--Dave

Switch to S Scale. Its a whole new world of stuff not readily available that you have to BUILD because you can't buy it! It will be an eye opener for long time HOers ;)

BTW I bought 45 bottles of Scalecoat on Friday. Left my LHS with abut 10 bottle of which I am likely to buy some of them!

While I'm thinking about it...Kato is offering RDG 35's custom painted by their painter numbers 3620/24.They posted pictures on their web site...draw your own conclusions.

Looks like SC paint will continue with the line purchased and moved to New Hamshire.

Chris and all,

A number of issues jump out at me when I look at the GP35s Kato is offering custom painted for Reading:
The green looks too pale, more like faded CNW green then the darker “Reading” green.
Safety yellow on the handrails is way too pale and it looks like the back sides of all the stanchions are yellow as well.
Also, I’m not too crazy about their version of the distinctive rain gutter; it looks like a straight piece of plastic just glued to the roof. (It’s distracting enough that I almost didn’t notice the open holes above the cab window for the sun shade.)
The paint separation lines between the green and yellow are very sloppy. This is a real head scratcher since the 90s release of this model had much crisper paint lines. If I were a betting man, I would place money on the assumption that Kato tossed their paint masks for these models years ago.

On top of all this, you’re still getting nearly 20 year old tooling.
I could go on, but I think those couple of issues – plus the $179 price tag – will force me to pass on these.

Thanks, Mark
