Memory teaser. I recall where the diesels were fueled, but I don't recall seeing the fuel storage tanks that fed the fueling tracks. Were they underground? Know there were company diesel fuel trucks for off-site locomotive fueling, which were replaced by deliveries by retail/wholesale oil dealers.

There was a small silver vertical fuel tank south of the coaling tower. I am pretty sure I have a photo that includes it, perhaps from the roof of the loco shop. I check that out when I get home tonight.

The sanding tower was immediately south of the coaling tower, between the coaling tower and the ash pits. Is this what you are referring to?

No, this was a fairly decent sized tank about halfway between the coal dock and the northern end of the Loco and car shops. Based on other tanks I have seen I would say it may have had a height and diameter to hold about 500K gals of fuel oil, maybe a little less. It also had a "wall" around it. I assume intended to be the containment pit. I pulled the photo and thought I brought it in to work to scan, but alas it must be at home yet.
Maybe just north of the road crossing going from the loco shop to the cars shop. I can go back to 92 in google earth and it is gone, but it was still there while we were commandeering the loco shops.

Will have to search the yard photos for this tank. From the late fifties through 1970, I took any opportunity to do a 6th Street drive-by but don’t recall this tank. (Must be getting old and forgetful.

The question now would be when did it appear?

PS the rant isn't directed at anyone here...more about the crazies on Facebook.
