Just received my 4 pack of Athearn HTw hoppers, they look very similar to some old Roundhouse “rib side” ones that I bought years ago. Sit slightly higher

Any thoughts

John

Assuming they still have metal frames, they are the same as the MDC Roundhouse. The details may be on the heavy side on them, but they were the best out there for a long time and there are plenty of them in my fleet. I wonder what makes them sit higher, new trucks or new frame?

I caved and picked up a four pack last week.Comparing these to my older RH models the top of the cars are even, there is a slight difference in coupler height.
The frame looks to be the same metal frame and the interior slope sheets are the standard weights used on hopper cars.
The tooling is the same but all the molded on grabs have been replaced with wire grabs. The outlet hatches are added on details and not molded. The model has all the brake detail(air cylinder, triple valve, reservoir)including piping. The trainline and supports are also included.Athearn included the end bracing which is a nice touch. The rope eyes and stirrup steps also appear to be metal add ons.
Old tooling?...yes,but the addition of the detail parts dresses this RDG HTw stand in up nicely. Not a priority, but I'll keep the other five units on my radar.

In N scale the MDC RH ones do just fine, shockingly another example of a rare model that represents Reading almost exactly
