What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

Here are RS-3's 484 and 471 heading East (toward Manville, NJ) at West Trenton, NJ, with a train load of what I believe is Anthracite Coal (note the Reading Hoppers) in July of 1966. An RS Short slide form my collection.

Thanks Bill! She was one of 3 RS3's that were leased to PRSL(which for the younger set) was the joint PRR (PC)-Rdg ops operated quasi-independently til Conrail in South Jersey. In the 70's as PRSL's BLW fleet was aging and frt traffic was booming, the PRSL could not get financing on more units as bankruptcy of both parents precluded it. So they leased PC units on a daily basis and got long-term leases of the RS3's -that weren't any more reliable than the BLW's! After the lease those 3 RS3's were retired and most sold off later in 74 I believe. I saw the 494 "at speed" on the former Rdg Atlantic City main (the PRSL Clementon br), a 40 mph, signalled line from Camden to Winslow, a few miles parallel to the ex-PRR AC main. She was on short time hauling a nice cut of cars on CA294 back to Pavonia, making 40, at least, thru Williamstown Jct, another one-time Rdg junction til the 30's. A friend of mine in Jersey got it as a blurry instamtic print but if he ever finds it...
