What's the difference between a GP40-2 and GP39-2? What year did the Reading dieselize? How many tracks were in Rutherford Yard? This board focuses on a discussion of questions or issues concerning the "prototype" Reading Company and its predecessors. While the aim of this board is to serve as a resource for prototype information for modeling purposes, general discussion and sharing of knowledge is also encouraged.

The Norfolk Southern heritage units are really sharp looking, I truely hope that N.S. will take the effort to keep those locomotives in at least a fair state of appearance. Ran the UP 1982 (MoP heritage) last week, to say that the unit was in a ratty state of appearance would be a compliment. Still waiting for that Reading locomotive to show up in South Texas, so far the Ill. Terminal and the Savanna & Atlanta units have made the trip. I think Todd Shoffler has the best idea of all, just go fish in the river!

Well guys, 1067 passed through CP Port at West Newport at 3:23 p.m. and it was up close and personal after standing 90 degree heat. Got four pics but angle of the sun was horrible. Todd Shoffler :woohoo:

Here's an undated photo of RDG 518 at what I believe is Erie Avenue. Must be late 50's or early 60's.

Here is a photo of RDG 446 in storage in Reading, in early 1974. I know there's a lot if interest in the NS heritage unit, but the old green RS-3's, GP-7's and switchers will always say Reading Company motive power whether restored, models or photos.

Did You Know?

October, 1962
Loss of mail and Railway Express Agency contracts prompts severe cuts in passenger service, including annulment of all service to Shamokin, and the Allentown-Harrisburg trains, and a reduction on remaining routes. RDCs replace most locomotive-hauled trains, freeing former passenger locomotives for freight service.
