The Herzog ballast cars are interesting in themselves. Some are all steel coal service gondolas that have been modified into ballast cars and some are constructed solely for such use. Each car has a solar panel to recharge onboard batteries that power motors that open and close the bottom gates. GPS units also are on the tops of these cars. By way of an electrical cord running the length of a train, dumping ballast is controlled by one operator (a Herzog technician) with the train moving at speeds up to 20MPH. A track profile installed into the technician's computer tells each car where to dump ballast.

Barry, Many Herzog cars are frequent visitors to the Trap Rock Quarry along 724, west of Birdsboro. Both the Pennsy and Reading paralleled 724. The PRR is now a rail trail and the Reading's infamous "Turkey path" sees the ballast trains coming out of the Haines and Kibbelhouse "Dyers/Trap Rock" Quarry. H&K have private cars also, I can't offhand recall the reporting marks, HKMX maybe??

Just as a point of interest and to add to Rob’s comments on the H&K operations along the Turkey path: A recent geological study of the area found that there is enough stone underground to last over 50 years. So, as long as there is a need for stone, there will still be a need for trains on the Turkey path. Actually, NS 3001 (one of the ex-Reading GP40-2 for the Joanna Turn) still makes an appearance on the Turkey Path as part of the local that works out of Reading. I have seen the locomotive many times, but have not had the good fortune to have my camera with me.

H&K tracks are far left and run to the quarry, NS locos are on ex-PRR line, and Turkey path is to the right. This shot is taken looking towards Reading.
