I am surprised that the New Haven didn't do better - that's one of Rapido's core competencies.

I am warming up to the idea of getting one or two. While they are outside my modeling era, they were a big part of my 1970's Reading experience. Pottsville, Bethlehem, Newark... Much of what I saw of the Reading was out of the windshield of a RDC.

Rob and List, Yes, the decoder makes a difference. The Soundtraxx decoder has worked well in both the P1K model and the NJ Custom Brass models on a friend's layout. Mine were all test run then stored, except one that had break-in time before disassembly for ALCAD II plating. This one's starts and slow speed operation improved noticeably after a break-in of twenty minutes running at medium-low speed one direction then twenty minutes running the opposite direction. The prototype car's acceleration was not that fast either so the model's sluggishness out of the box was not an issue. On several cab rides from Reading Terminal to Reading the acceleration was not equal to the push-pulls' performance. Those rides were the push-pull down and the RDCs up.

Hogtrainz.com has the Reading DC version listed at $182.98, DCC at $259.00.
That’s better, but still very pricey. Even if some online retailers like Toy Train Heaven discount them down to $150 for DC and say $248 for DCC (not likely), it’s still a hard sell.
By the way, someone commented earlier in the thread that Reading RDCs did not have the sand filler hatches on the sides. Is that just a phase thing or are the hatches not on any Reading RDCs?
Thanks, Mark

Well, it looks like enough preorders were placed for the Reading RDCs that Rapido will be making them after all. They just posted a list over on The Atlas Rescue Forum of road names in danger of not being produced due to lack of preorders.

Here is the list (some road names may surprise you):
PGE
Amtrak
B&M McGinnis
CNJ
MBTA
New Haven (both)
PRSL

At $225 MSRP for the DC version, I have no choice but to pass. Maybe if these get heavily discounted (either by online retailers or on ebay) I’ll get one.

Personally, for that kind of money, I would rather buy a steam engine.

Thanks, Mark

I wonder if there is any correlation between the "Phases" of the RDCs and the ones being produced? The Rapido Phase 2 types would be the only good ones produced. the Walthers Proto ones are much more reasonably priced, so those "Phase 1" style RDCs perhaps are not selling as well?

At least I'm glad they're still making the Reading, I put my order in for one of these (cause i'm dumb).
